It’s time for another Athlete Spotlight! This week, we talked with Ms. Pam Thomason about her CrossFit journey, the incredible progress she’s seen mentally and physically, how she’s staying motivated during shelter-in-place, and much more.
Tell us about yourself: When did you join JR CrossFit? What are some of your other hobbies?
I joined JR about two years ago. I had some issues with my wrist ( nothing to do working out) so I laid out for a while and nothing the doctor did helped. Coach Julianna showed me a few stretches and moves to help my wrist and it worked. I am a retired principal with 36 years in Waco ISD.
What was your workout routine like before joining JR CrossFit?
I have always worked out mainly running until I hurt one of my knees and had to have it replaced. I would have never considered CrossFit at my age but my son got involved a year before and the transformation was incredible. He lost 100 lbs and was no longer diabetic. Did I think why not try?
Why did you pick JR CrossFit?
I was hesitant because I was 65 years old. I contacted two boxes. One I never heard from but JR responded immediately and was so encouraging and accepting of my age and limitations. Walking in for the first time was hard but I was received with open arms and assurance that whatever to workout as there was a way I could engage and I did. I am sure I’m the oldest but I am amazed at how I can hang in there. I have modifications but coaches are always finding ways I can move forward. I love the family there.
What kind of progress (physical, mental, etc) have you seen since you started at JR CrossFit?
I have seen a great increase in my mobility, strength, and balance which are all issues at my age. I had quit riding my bike at home due to balance and endurance. I’m riding again.
How has JR CrossFit helped you stay active and motivated during the coronavirus shutdown?
I am keeping up with workouts during the shelter in place motivated by the daily sharing with other JR members. We all encourage each other and I love the family members and their children.
What are some of your CrossFit and fitness goals going forward?
My goal is always weight loss, which I struggle with but I know I’m in much better shape than before JR. It helps me with stress.
What advice would you give to someone considering joining JR CrossFit?
I would always encourage people of any age and/or fitness level to join. Don’t be intimidated by what you think CrossFit is and try it. If I can anyone can and JR is more than a box. It’s a community, a family.
