If you’re thinking about starting CrossFit, or if you’re finally getting back into a routine after taking some time off, there are a variety of strategies that can help you succeed. In this week’s blog post, we highlight five tips that will help you have a successful CrossFit workout routine.
Tip #1: Remember why you’re starting CrossFit
People have a variety of different reasons for starting CrossFit. Some are looking to get stronger and faster, others are focused on losing weight and becoming an overall healthier person. Some people are just looking to be held accountable by fellow workout partners. The good news, but it will take time. Change doesn’t happen overnight.
When you start CrossFit for the first time, it’s important to remember why you’re doing it, and to remember that you won’t see instant results. If you’re looking to lose weight, you might actually gain weight at first as your body adapts to your new workout regiment combined with factors like drinking more water and eating more protein.
On the other hand, if you’re looking to get stronger, you’ll undoubtedly feel sore before you feel stronger. If you set out with the expectation of losing weight and doubling your PRs within the first week, you’ll get discouraged. It’s important to remember these factors when you start CrossFit and to remember that change takes time.
Tip #2: Ask for help
One of the best things about JR CrossFit is that you get to start with our Elements course, which walks you through the basics of the CrossFit movements and how to scale them to meet your fitness needs. During the Elements courses, it’s crucial that you ask questions when you don’t understand something.
It’s also important that you continue to ask for help and listen to coaches once you start attending regular CrossFit classes. If you see a movement in the workout you don’t understand, the coaches are there to help. If there’s a movement you simply aren’t ready for yet, ask the coach about modifying it.
Every workout at JR CrossFit is designed such that it can be modified to meet your fitness level. You can scale down the weight of lifting, you can bike instead of run, you can modify your pull-ups. The opportunities are endless, so never be afraid to ask a coach for help modifying it to meet your needs.
Tip #3: Try out different class times
JR CrossFit offers a full schedule of classes so that you can fit your workout in regardless of your other commitments that day. We offer classes at 5 a.m., 12 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as an additional 6:30 p.m. class on Monday through Thursday. We’ve got options on the weekend as well, including Barbell Club, Rowing, and Community.
When you first start CrossFit, it’s important to try out these different class times and see what works best for you. Personally, I found the 5 a.m. class to be the best option for me, since it allows me to my workout in first thing in the morning. Be sure to check out our full blog post on why you should start your day off with a 5 AM CrossFit workout.
One of my favorite recommendations is to make a point to attend a few 10 a.m. Community Classes on Saturday mornings. These classes are a great way to meet more people and become a deeper member of the JR CrossFit family. Plus, Saturday workouts are regularly partner workouts, so you’ll get a chance to work out with friends.
Tip #4: Stay consistent
When you first start CrossFit, it’s easy to find an excuse as to why you might want to skip a workout. Maybe you had a long day, maybe you just think the workout will be too difficult. It’s important to overcome this mental barrier and do what you can to get into the box as consistently as possible.
As we said earlier, every workout at JR CrossFit can be modified to meet your fitness needs. This means that it’s never a valid excuse to skip a workout because you don’t know how to do a movement or because you’re worried the workout is simply too challenging for you.
Having a consistent schedule for working out also gives your body the much-needed time to recover. This means your body is adapting to your schedule and getting stronger. Having a consistent workout schedule also makes it easier to manage that soreness, with days dedicated to mobility and stretching.
Tip #5: Be prepared to leave your comfort zone
And finally, our fifth tip is to stop hesitating and worrying about it! We will welcome you with open arms at JR CrossFit, regardless of your current fitness level. Coach Izzie said it best when we talked to her last week, explaining that the greatest growth happens when you’re outside of your comfort zone:
“Remind yourself of why you want to start, and remember that starting something new can seem overwhelming and a little scary, but the greatest growth happens outside of your comfort zone. Beginning something like Crossfit is an investment- in yourself and your health. You are beginning something new to become stronger, both mentally and physically, and you will be doing things you never knew you were capable of. You will meet amazing people along the way and will become hooked!”
