In this blog post, we’re back with another JR CrossFit Athlete Spotlight! This week, we talked with Hellon Morelock about the incredible progress she’s seen over the last two years at JR CrossFit, her goals for the future, and much more. Check out our full interview below!
Tell us about yourself: When did you join JR CrossFit? How often do you usually make it to the box? What are some of your other hobbies?
I usually make it to the box about 3-4 times a week. A coworker brought me to ‘bring a friend day’ in October of 2018. At this point of time, I was that typical bride that was “sweating for the wedding” and then after I got married, I completely stopped working out and went back to my bad eating habits. That first day of CrossFit was so successful, I attended the next community WOD and started my membership at JRCF that month. Besides working as a Database Administrator in the IS department at Texas Farm Bureau and being at the box, you’ll usually find me smoking something on the grill, fishing with my husband on our boat or nerding to my favorite computer games (Fallout, ESO, WOW, Sims)!
What kind of progress (physical, mental, etc) have you seen since you started at JR CrossFit? How do you stay motivated?
When I moved to Waco in 2013 I was 135 pounds with high metabolism, ate whatever I wanted and never worked out. For the next 3 years I spent the majority of the day doing nothing but school work and working at a call center. I had physically no time, energy or money for a gym membership to workout. Thus I gained 30 pounds and felt so lethargic. I did lose about 10 pounds up until I got married in April of 2018. But since joining JRCF I’ve lost about 10 more pounds, gained muscle mass in places that I have never had before and my overall mental health has been much better. I may not be the tiny 135 pounds as before but I absolutely love the shape that I am today!
To stay motivated I go to 5 Star Nutrition every 2 weeks to get my inbody analysis. It helps me visualize my progress and what I need to improve on. When I first started JRCF I made a bunch of excuses to not go to the box but the community was always reaching out to me to check to see if I was okay and pushing me to get up there. I also started convincing myself mentally that “I need this to blow off steam” or “you know you’ll feel better afterwards”.
What are some of your CrossFit and fitness goals going forward?
My goal is to push myself to try new things such as gymnastics. From 3-14 years old, dance was a big part of my life (I danced competitively for a few years). Never during that time did I do gymnastics or cheerleading. I had this fear of being upside down. JRCF has really boosted my confidence to try things that were so scary back then. Through proper coaching and techniques, I can now do a handstand against the wall! I’d also like to really nail proper form with the basic CF movements such as snatches and C&J’s. Those two movements are my favorite and I know it’s going to be a good day when it’s in the WOD.
Why did you choose JR CrossFit? What’s your favorite thing about it?
I remember from that first day (bring a friend day) we did burpees and jumping pull-ups. I was so out of shape and sucking in so much wind that Jai had me do a few more reps and take a break. After the WOD everyone came by to check up on me and encouraged me to keep going. The community has always been supportive and wonderful that I knew that this is the place to be. They truly live to their motto ‘I am, because we are’. The coaches are very knowledgeable and take precautions to make sure you don’t kill yourself! The box itself is clean and just all around a great facility to workout in!
What advice would you give to someone considering joining JR CrossFit?
My advice is to just come see what the JRCF community is like! It doesn’t matter what level of athleticism you are, we are all going through the same WOD and we will root for you to be your best self!
