Tell us about yourself:
I’m a full-time mother, with a full-time position at the hospital as an office worker, and soon to be a student again.
When did you join JR CrossFit?
I do believe it was in the middle of June 2017
What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to travel as much as possible with my son, Wyatt. l let him pick the places and we head out as soon as possible. We love to go fishing at least once a week, camping, hiking, basically getting outside. But really whatever my son and I can get into.
What was your workout routine like before joining JR CrossFit?
I honestly didn’t have a routine before joining. I just had no discipline or even motivation to think about working out. But when I thought I could do it myself I joined numerous gyms plus different types of fitness camps but nothing really helped or kept my attention. As for gyms, I needed a workout buddy but not many people could commit so then I just wouldn’t go. As for camps, I did see a slight improvement but I found them rather boring. Of course, I tried numerous diets but saw little to no outcome. Overall, I really wasn’t happy with my body, or the example I was setting for my son. I started to think “Well, I’ve always been big so I guess that’s what I’m going to be the rest of my life.”
What kind of progress (physical, mental, etc) have you seen since you started at JR CrossFit?
Since I started I’ve seen a big difference in myself; mentally and physically. I have learned that it is a must to work out to help decrease my stress, along with clearing my mind. When working out all I think about is finishing that WOD and if possible to beat my past WOD score. Joining JR Crossfit couldn’t have happened at a better time. I was really at my low point in life; depressed, stressed, and not being pleased with my current situation. After finishing that first class I felt a huge weight lifted from my shoulders. From that day I knew I was addicted! As they say in the Crossfit World “You drank the Crossfit Kool-Aid” Well I sure did drink it and enjoyed every bit of it.
How do you stay motivated?
It’s really my son and my clothes that keep me motivated. I want to be able to look nice in my clothes and not have to buy new ones just because I don’t fit into them anymore. I have to care about being healthy and showing my son he should care as well. He does like to workout with me and when he gets the chance to he’s all for it.
Why did you pick JR CrossFit?
Well I do have a few reasons: For one I picked JR mainly due to the way they treated my son and I since day one. I felt they welcomed us instantly. Previously I had visited other Crossfit boxes in Waco. The first one I went to I felt way out of place because it seemed everyone else there was super fit which made me feel uncomfortable since I was just started out. The second gym in my opinion didn’t have many friendly members. No one acknowledged me other than “Excuse me, you’re in my spot”. As for the third one, my family was enrolled there but it was too far and I knew that would eventually be a problem.
A great memory I have of JR Crossfit was when I did my first time WOD, which was murder in my eyes; I couldn’t do anything that it was saying for us to do, I knew that but I still gave it a try. After the WOD I was on the floor rethinking my life choices, felt as if I was going to be called “home” soon. Jai came up to my dying body and actually held a conversation with me. She didn’t just say “Good Job!” and walk away to hold a conversation with someone but she came up asking me questions about my goals, life, and wanting to get to know me on a personal level. That really meant something to me because I wasn’t just a number or another dollar there, she truly wanted to know who I was.
Another reason was that Wyatt seemed to be happier there since they had a little “Cub Club” where he could play with the other kids. It felt like a family environment where we all workout together, with positive vibes, uplifting energy, and so many people that might not even know you but encourage you to finish that WOD strong .
I like that Jai and the other coaches explain the movements thoroughly. And also they always include different modifications since I have nerve damage in my right arm and it’s harder to do certain movements. From the first day Jai asked if I had any problems physically that she needed to know about. She stressed that she didn’t want me to get hurt or further my injuries. That’s when I truly knew that JR Crossfit was the place that I wanted to go.
What’s your favorite thing about it?
Truthfully it’s hard to pick just one. But I really enjoy the get-togethers, outings, and holiday parties. As for classes I love attending the barbell and weight lifting classes. Joking with the coaches is a huge plus for me!
What are some of your CrossFit and fitness goals going forward?
My goals are really simple: tone up, lift more, and conquer box jumps.
What advice would you give to someone considering joining JR CrossFit?
If you are thinking of joining, be prepared to have friends that become part of your family. If you never stepped foot inside a gym or feel like you can’t do a movement or lift a barbell or even do a box jump that’s ok, there are so many different movements that will fit your capabilities. We all have goals that we are trying to meet so why not work on our fitness goals together?
