For this week’s blog post, we checked in with Rachel Page for an Athlete Spotlight. In our interview, Rachel explains how she is staying active through quarantine thanks to our at-home programming, the amazing progress she’s seen thanks to CrossFit, and much more.
Tell us about yourself: When did you join JR CrossFit? What are some of your other hobbies?
I joined JR Crossfit when we moved to Waco in 2017. I had been a crossfitter for about 5 years before and had high standards for what a Crossfit box needed to provide! JR checked all the boxes! I love doing anything outdoors – hiking, biking, jeeping. Oh, and I’m a big book nerd. I LOVE to read!
What are your favorite things about JR CrossFit and the community?
JR is for everyone – competitive athletes to those that want to move on a daily basis and maintain overall health goals. This is evident in every class and in coaching. Every coach is mindful of everyone’s individual goals and abilities and ensures safety is the number one priority!
What kind of progress (physical, mental, etc) have you seen thanks to CrossFit?
Wow! Before crossfitting, I was a runner – half marathons, 10k’s, mud runs, you name it! I was bored and fighting a lot of overuse injuries. When I found crossfit, I realized that my body could do so much more and I loved the variety. It was more about being “skinny”, it became about being strong and pushing the limits of what the female body could do. As a former ballet dancer, I was drawn to the technical aspects and body mechanics of olympic lifting. Also, at the end of a long day at a demanding job, Crossfit provides the mental drain that I need!!!
How has JR CrossFit helped you stay active and motivated during the coronavirus shutdown?
We have LOVED all the equipment on loan from JR and the flexible and challenging programming. This has enabled me to keep up my fitness routine! I have managed to workout 6 days a week and have grown to love the dumbbell. Well, maybe!
What are some of your CrossFit and fitness goals going forward?
As always I hope to just stay healthy and keep moving! I have my weaknesses and I’d love to grow in some of those areas but the community and my personal health are most important. In the next year, I aspire to get my Level 1 certification and would love to assist with coaching needs and maybe even head up some kids’ programs! As a former teacher, I’d love to apply these skills to crossfit!
What advice would you give to someone considering joining JR CrossFit?
Don’t be scared and don’t underestimate the things you are capable of! There is nothing more empowering than trying something new and being successful because you are surrounded by such a supportive and safe community! Just do it!
